ownCloud, as a general term, is a software system that offers the "file hosting" service. Very similar to the Dropbox service which is also in widespread use, ownCloud has such an important difference that it is free and open source software. In this way, everyone, establishing a dedicated server at no charge and with no limit on the amount of storage or number of clients connected (except the hard disk capacity) can use that service.
